Lillehaugen Farms is located in northeastern North Dakota about 60 miles south of the Canadian border and 70 miles west of the ND/MN line. After many years and many breeds of wool sheep on the farm, we sold out of sheep in 1993 and became a beef cow and grain farming operation. After Luke was introduced to Katahdin sheep at his job with the North Dakota State University Sheep Unit, we decided Katahdin sheep would be beneficial to the operation to help clean up around the grain bins and buildings during the summer.

We purchased 25 commercial ewe lambs in 2005 and added 15 registered ewes to our flock in 2009. We continue to grow both the commercial and registered ewes each year, currently we breed about 180 ewes. Our ewe flock is larger framed, but still easy keepers. We feed minimal grain to the ewes from lambing through weaning, and then they are on grass and hay the rest of the time. We look for sound-structured, fast-growing, heavy-muscled lambs that will work well in a variety of operations.

We keep careful records on all of our sheep from the first day to the last day they are on the farm. High quality, good-producing sheep get top billing over color, and to some degree, hair coat. We prefer a slick shedding sheep, but being in the commercial end, will not throw away a good ewe just because of a woollier coat.

In the Katahdin business, we have sold ewe lambs and ram lambs in North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wyoming, Wisconsin, and Texas. We currently lamb in February, March and April.
